Description of Spikenard Plant

🌻 Spikenard is a stunning alpine plant, though it is quite rare. It features beautiful rose-purple to whitish flowers that grow in dense clusters at the ends of branches, often with additional branching. The entire plant emits a unique and lasting fragrance. Spikenard has been cherished since ancient times for its fragrant properties.

🌻 Jatamansi gets its name from its thick roots and numerous hair-like structures, known as “jata” in Sanskrit. The term is a combination of two words: “Jata,” which refers to dreadlocks, and “manasi,” meaning related to humans. This remarkable herb has been utilized for various medicinal purposes since ancient times. The primary medicinal components are its dried rhizomes and roots.

Morphological characteristics of Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)

🌻 The flower tube varies in length from 6 to 20 mm, with five rounded petals that can spread to 1.2 cm or more. The sepal cup is colorful and has five lobes, with the sepals expanding and becoming papery as the fruit develops.

🌻 The leaves are either elliptic-lanceolate or spoon-shaped, measuring 5 to 20 cm, primarily located at the base and emerging from a spindle-shaped rootstock covered in dark fibers from old leaves. The flowering stem can reach heights of 5 to 30 cm, and the fruit is obovate, flattened, and contains a single seed.

Habitat of Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)

🌻 Spikenard typically grows on rocky surfaces, ledges, and open slopes in the Himalayas, ranging from Uttarakhand to southwestern China, at elevations of 3600 to 4800 meters. The flowering period occurs from June to August.
